July 17th 2014, I am watching the news, I still watched news back then, I only quit doing that some time ago. More on that in another post. So back to July 17th 2014, flight MH17 of Malaysia Airlines which had taken off from Amsterdam Airport was shot down above Eastern Ukraine, and I feel lost, helpless. Feelings of despair, the world is going to an end and I have no influence.
Is that true? Do I have no influence? I started looking at places where I do have influence, beyond the obvious voting. I looked at where I was banking, my health insurance, my energy supplier, where I get my groceries and which products I buy. Basically where does my money go and does that somehow support the negative things happening in the world? Or prevent the good initiatives from growing. There are quite some comparison websites out there that help you make informed decisions on these topics. I’m listing a few:
- Eerlijke geldwijzer (for Dutch residents): compares pension funds, banks and insurance companies on many important criteria.
- Energy companies (for Dutch residents): list (with scores) of sustainable Energy companies
- Ecosia as search engine. They plant a tree for every search you do via their search engine. It’s good enough for most search queries and feels a thousand times better than using a commercially driven search engine.
July 18th 2014, I switched bank and energy supplier, for good.
Do you know of other honest comparison websites to help you make informed decisions? Please leave them in the comments, I’ll add them to the list.
